How We Train

Each dog is trained with a single goal: to support a Veteran on their path forward.

Learning Phases

We hold our training to the highest standard—because lives depend on it.

From the start, our Service Dogs are raised with purpose. They’re trained using positive methods by skilled professionals and trusted inmate trainers in our prison program. Our Volunteer Puppy Raisers help them grow up confident and prepared by exposing them to the real world through stores, restaurants, sidewalks, and crowds. Every part of the process is designed to produce dependable, highly trained Service Dogs who are ready to stand beside a Veteran who needs them.

Raising Purpose Puppies

Programs That Build Life-Changing Dogs

Behind every great dog is a team. Our programs work together to train dogs that are steady, focused, and ready to meet the needs of a Veteran who’s counting on them.

Raised To Excel

Patriot PAWS' programs are built to give each puppy the experience, care, and structure they need to grow into an exceptional Service Dog. From the moment a Purpose Puppy is born, they’re surrounded by people who invest in their future. Each program plays a critical role in laying their training foundation, building their skills, and shaping the bond that will one day change a Veteran’s life.

At the heart of their journey is our Rockwall training team. These trainers work to build core skills through structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement. That foundation continues to grow through the help of our extended training partners.

Trained With Real-Life Experience

Along the way, our Purpose Puppies live and train in several environments. Volunteer DFW Puppy Raisers bring them into their homes, teaching them how to behave in public, navigate crowds, and stay calm in unpredictable situations. At Texas A&M, our student Puppy Raisers from Patriot PAWS of Aggieland give them exposure to campus life, providing the critical socializing skills every Service-Dog-In-Training needs to handle the world with confidence.

Shaped for a Lifetime of Service

Our Inmate Training Program, Trained to Heal, is another vital part of what we do. Inside Texas prison units, Inmate Trainers take on the responsibility of daily training, living with their dogs 24/7 and creating a bond that runs deep. Inmates give their time and full attention to shaping each dog with care and focused training. In return, the dogs provide them with purpose and unconditional love. It’s a program that changes lives, on both ends of the leash.

Every step of our training process exists with one goal in mind: to give a Veteran a Service Dog they can trust with their hardest days.

Inmate‑Led Training

Trained to Heal

Trained to Heal, Patriot PAWS’ Inmate Training Program, gives incarcerated men and women a chance to make a real impact—training future Service Dogs for Veterans in need. Inmate trainers live with our dogs full time, building trust, discipline, and connection through daily care and focused training.

In-Home Experience

DFW Puppy Raiser Program

The DFW Puppy Raisers Program is at the heart of  preparing our Purpose Puppies for their future as life-changing Service Dogs. Volunteers lovingly welcome puppies into their homes, guiding them through everyday experiences that build their confidence and social skills. It’s a rewarding  journey that makes a real difference, not only in the lives of the puppies but also in the lives of the Veterans they’ll one day serve.

Student Volunteers

Patriot PAWS of Aggieland Program

Patriot PAWS of Aggieland brings together over 100 Texas A&M students each semester to raise and train service dogs for Veterans. Through this hands-on experience, students gain valuable skills while  making a lasting impact on the lives of those who served. The program offers a unique opportunity to be part of something bigger, contributing to the independence and well-being of a Veteran.

SAVE A VETERAN IN NEED

Help us keep changing Veterans’ lives, four paws at a time.

Patriot PAWS' mission isn’t possible without your donations. Each of our Service Dogs takes 18–24 months to train at a cost of over $45,000. Veterans will never receive a bill, so every dollar makes a difference. Your generosity will go right to work to help Veterans with mobile disabilities and Post-Traumatic Stress.
